Coraline, Henry Selick’s 3-D stop-motion adaptation of a Neil Gaiman book, has a lot of visual wonders, but my favorite may be the frowny-eyed half-sneer that frequently plays across the face of the eleven-year-old heroine, a perfect encapsulation of the smart-girl expression that says, “I may just be a kid, but I’m not buying this and you shouldn’t be selling it.” Thanks in no small part to Myra Traylor’s decision to stand me up when I thought we were going to see Metalstorm: The Destruction of
